Underfloor Heating Project Overview

Heated Floors designed and supplied a complete wet underfloor heating system for a large ground-floor renovation in South Buckinghamshire.

The 140m² system was carefully planned across 12 heating zones, giving the homeowner independent temperature control throughout the ground floor. Once the design and equipment had been supplied, the system was installed by Heppelthwaite, The Red Van Plumbers.

Designing the Underfloor Heating System

A project of this size needed more than a standard equipment package. Every room, pipe circuit and heating zone had to be considered before installation began.

Heated Floors produced a detailed AutoCAD pipe layout covering the kitchen, lounge, dining area, study, utility room, WC, entrance hall and lobby.

The design showed the installer:

• The position and route of each pipe loop
• The required pipe spacing
• How the rooms should be divided into zones
• Where pipes should pass between different floor areas
• How each circuit should connect to the manifold

Planning these details in advance helped the installer work efficiently while ensuring the finished system would provide balanced and consistent heating.

A 12-Zone Heating Configuration

The ground floor was separated into 12 individually controlled zones. Larger rooms used multiple pipe circuits, while smaller areas were designed with their own dedicated zones. This configuration allows the homeowner to adjust different parts of the property independently. Rooms can therefore be heated according to how frequently they are used, rather than operating the entire ground floor at one temperature.

Low-Profile Overlay System

Because the underfloor heating formed part of an existing property renovation, keeping the additional floor height to a minimum was an important consideration. Heated Floors specified reinforced XPS overlay panels rather than a traditional screeded system. Standard panels were used across the main floor areas, with closer-spaced transit panels positioned around doorways and connecting routes. This provided a practical low-profile solution that could be incorporated into the wider renovation without the depth or drying period associated with a new screed floor.

Underfloor Heating Equipment Supplied

The complete system package included:

• A 12-port underfloor heating manifold
• Circulator pump and mixer unit
• Pressure gauge and automatic air vent
• Individual actuators for all 12 zones
• 16mm Pert-AL-Pert underfloor heating pipe
• Reinforced XPS overlay panels
• Transit panels for connecting pipe routes
• Valves, connectors and associated components

Supplying the system as one coordinated package ensured the components were compatible with both the design and the planned installation method.

Supporting the Installation Team

Heated Floors supplied the installer with the system specification and detailed pipe layout required to complete the work correctly. Heppelthwaite, The Red Van Plumbers, then installed, connected, tested and commissioned the system as part of the property renovation. This approach allowed the installation team to work from a professionally prepared design rather than making decisions about pipe routes, loop lengths and zoning once work had already started.
